London’s Calling Salesforce is Europe’s largest community-led event for Salesforce professionals. It’s an annual, not-for-profit conference that offers multiple tracks of content, speakers, and networking opportunities for admins, developers, architects, and other Salesforce users. The 2025 event took place on June 6th at The Brewery in London.
My name is Millie, and I am a Salesforce Consultant at Desynit. I have been working on the Salesforce Platform for 7 years, and I am always looking to learn more about Salesforce and thinking about how I can apply my knowledge to my clients. Although I have been in the Salesforce Ecosystem for a while, this was my first year at London’s Calling, and I was eager to attend as I had always heard such great things about this event.
I attended a talk at London’s Calling by Tom Bassett titled “Becoming a Thoughtful and Impactful Salesforce Admin.” Tom Bassett is a highly respected Salesforce Solution Architect and a prominent figure in the Salesforce community, known for his extensive certifications and as the host of the Be More podcast.
He’s a major contributor to Salesforce resources like Salesforce Ben and the Salesforce Answers Community, consistently sharing his expertise to help others maximise their use of the platform. I found myself nodding along throughout his presentation, relating to so many of the scenarios he described and recognising the challenges he highlighted.
Tom really hit home the idea that we, as admins/consultants, are so much more than just administrators. He broke down the diverse hats we wear, which resonated with my own experience.
While he covered lots of topics, here are some of the key takeaways from his talk that particularly stuck with me.
Tom recommended ways to keep your Org Tidy, outlining best practices. When building a flow outline object/trigger type/purpose. When using permission sets, explain the Object/Access Level, and define the function of a Permission Set Group. When creating a lightning page, specify Object/App/User. Indicate field usage at Field Level Active/Inactive
He emphasised the critical role of thorough testing. This means actively engaging users in User Acceptance Testing (UAT), regularly performing regression tests and consistently running Apex tests.
Tom also highlighted the need for a robust release process. Having a clear rollback plan is essential. Deploying to production outside of working hours minimises disruption. Clear and concise release notes keep everyone informed. Being prepared for Salesforce releases is crucial for staying ahead of the curve.
Think before you act: Is there a bigger picture? What is the User trying to achieve when making a request? Don’t always go with your first thought; give time and research the best approach going forward.
Over-engineering can hamper user adoption efforts and lead to more problems than it solves. A simple solution is often one that took the longest to architect and requires the most skill..
Clear naming conventions and component descriptions are vital for a clear understanding of your Salesforce Org. This is useful not only for your future self but for anybody else who works in the Salesforce org, too. It creates context and makes things easier to understand.
Your future self (and other admins) will thank you for recording why a process was built a certain way, and how to use it.
The Salesforce landscape is always evolving, and so should we if we want to delight our customers.
A particular point that resonated strongly was the call to be mindful in our work. Tom used a great example: when building solutions in an international environment, always consider multi-lingual capabilities, even if you’re only implementing one language initially.
This forward-thinking approach can simplify future expansions and save countless hours for you or another admin down the line. It’s about building with foresight and considering the broader impact of our work.
Tom Bassett’s talk was a great reminder of the significant impact Salesforce Admins have. It reinforced the idea that by being more thoughtful, proactive, and mindful in our approach, we become invaluable assets to our organisations.
